AI-Driven Abuse Content: The Emerging Threat DSLs Can’t Ignore
Artificial intelligence is reshaping every aspect of modern life — and unfortunately, that includes how abusers exploit technology to harm children. Over the past week, researchers and law-enforcement agencies have raised fresh alarms about the rise of AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and the growing challenge of policing it.
The new frontier of online harm
Unlike traditional abuse imagery, AI-generated content can be created without direct contact with a child. Offenders use sophisticated image-generation tools to produce realistic, exploitative images that mimic genuine abuse. These can be shared on encrypted platforms or used as part of grooming processes to normalise sexualised behaviour and desensitise victims.
Recent analysis from international taskforces has shown a surge in AI-generated CSAM being detected online — some using photographs of real children taken from social media to create “deepfake” material. Experts warn this could have devastating psychological impacts on victims and make detection even harder for authorities.
Why this matters for schools
For Designated Safeguarding Leads, this isn’t a remote issue. It intersects directly with online safety education, digital safeguarding policies, and staff and pupil awareness. Many young people are now familiar with AI image-generation apps; some may be pressured into sharing photos that could be manipulated, while others may create or share inappropriate content without understanding the legal or ethical consequences.
DSLs need to ensure their RSHE, online-safety and staff-training programmes reflect these new realities. That means:
